Questions to ask about sustainable PVC additives

Sustainability assessment goes beyond an additive's chemical family. Feedstock, production energy, service life and recycling scenarios need to be considered together. Non-phthalate, bio-based and lead-free describe different attributes and are not interchangeable.

Selection supported by documentation

Environmental comparisons need the same functional unit and system boundary. A comparison per kilogram of raw material may overlook differences in service life. Ask for the scope, date and verification method of available data. With recycled PVC, test how feedstock and batch variability affect stabilisation requirements.

Related products and technical evaluation

ASSAFE — Calcium-zinc (Ca-Zn) PVC stabilizer

Select a Ca-Zn system together with PVC resin, filler, plasticizer, lubrication balance and processing temperature. Initial colour and long-term thermal stability are distinct targets. Validate the grade and dosage through a production trial; the Ca-Zn designation is not automatic certification of the finished product.

ASMIX — Lead-based PVC stabilizer

Review destination-market and application-category restrictions before selecting a lead-based system. Technical performance does not establish regulatory suitability. When evaluating a Ca-Zn alternative, compare thermal stability, lubrication balance and finished-product tests together.

Sunfleks DOTP — DOTP / DEHT plasticizer

Select DOTP against the complete formulation: target Shore hardness, resin, filler loading, processing temperature and service conditions. When replacing DOP or DINP, validate the dosage in a pilot run and ageing tests rather than assuming identical mechanical performance at the same loading.
