Colour stability and process control in PVC compounds

Colour change in PVC is not necessarily caused by pigment alone. Thermal history, the stabilizer package, mixing, equipment residues and raw-material variability should be examined together. Changing several formulation variables at once can hide the root cause.
Make the problem measurable
Fix the reference colour, measuring instrument, specimen thickness and lighting conditions. Compare line temperature, residence time and samples from the start and end of the run. Trial stabilizer or pigment changes one at a time. Assess colour after processing and ageing as well as the initial appearance.
