Effect of Plasticizers on Mechanical Properties

All basic mechanical properties of PVC, such as flexibility, strength, impact resistance and processability, directly depend on the choice of plasticizer. The right plasticizer, the right ratio and the right process — determine the performance of the material.

Effect of Plasticizers on Mechanical Properties

All basic mechanical properties of PVC such as flexibility, strength, impact resistance and processability directly depend on the choice of plasticizer. The right plasticizer, the right ratio and the right process — determine the performance of the material.

1. Flexibility and Shore Hardness

As the plasticizer ratio increases, Shore A hardness decreases and flexibility increases.
• DOP, DINP → general purpose
• DOTP → more stable flexibility profile
• DOA → higher flexibility at low temperature

2. Tensile and Tensile Strength

Plasticizer type affects the strength because it increases the movement between polymer chains:
• Aromatic esters → higher strength
• Linear esters → softness + balanced strength

3. Low Temperature Performance

A critical parameter for cold air lines, food hoses and outdoor applications.
Esters such as DOA and TOTM maintain elasticity even below -20°C.

4. Processability

Plasticizer selection:
✓ gelation time
✓ torque
✓ viscosity
✓ production speed
directly changes it.

Conclusion

Plasticizer is the main determinant of mechanical properties. Choosing the right ester according to the needs of the application directly increases the quality.
